Metropolitan
559 Lorimer St., nr. Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg; 718-599-4444
It’s a tough time for gay bars right now, but Brooklyn’s Metropolitan bar is still far better than the rest. This is just as perfect a place to casually meet up with friends for drinks as it is for a late-night pit stop to get laid. Their Saturday “Gag” night is full of scruffy art guys, jocks, cute lesbians, and the requisite creepy old drunk in the corner, all mingling happily together. In the winter, you can make out next to one of two fireplaces, and during the summer, the Sunday free barbecue on the back patio is the ultimate way to end a sunburned weekend. Plus it’s just funny to see 150 gay guys eating hot dogs at the same time.
Best Gay Bar
Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
