This cavernous, banquette-lined space serves up sleaze with a panache that’s absent from both gym-queen megaclubs and plush East Village lounges. The walls are decorated with fake Louis Vuitton emblems and—naturally—red cocks (the bird). There’s a gigantic screen for campy movies and gay porn. The American Apparel–clad go-go boys are scruffy, slim, and approachable. And the crowd is packed with artists and creative professionals (and a few girls) whose taste for debauchery is too refined for other bars. Not that they’re above some good unclean fun. After three free tequila shots and one D.J. mix of classic rock, mid-eighties pop, and hip-hop, the friendly bartenders might persuade you to shake your package atop the bar next week.
Best Gay Bar
From the 2006 Best of New York issue of New York Magazine
Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
