Profile

Although usually more a bastion of good taste than a stirrer of controversy, the Museum of Arts & Design made some waves in the arts community in 2002 when it dropped the moniker “American Craft Museum.” The name change—plus a subsequent exhibit that featured a Michael Graves telephone sold by Target—caused critics to worry that the museum was starting to favor industrial design over traditional crafts. In addition, its impending move to 2 Columbus Circle includes plans to remodel the building, which has prompted a lawsuit by preservationists, as well as a lengthy, vitriolic column by Tom Wolfe in The New York Times. When the museum eventually transfers to its new quarters, it will have more room to display its permanent collection. For now, though, the current exhibition space, elegant if not large, consists of three high-ceilinged rooms connected by curving white staircases. The galleries contain various temporary exhibitions, such as a themed show about Native American art or exhibits devoted to an individual glass blower, jewelry maker, textile designer or ceramicist. Whether featuring arts, crafts or designs, shows are usually tasteful and pleasant and every so often—such as a 2004 exhibit about the human body—a little bit controversial.

Museum Shop

The shop mirrors the museum’s exhibitions by selling attractive, functional and decorative objects. The open shelves showcase the colorful wares from all sides.
