Profile

In a universe where karaoke is the vocal equivalent of aromatherapy, Karaoke One 7 should be considered a songster spa. The ground floor space, with its flickering candles, shimmering tiles, and exposed brick walls, is certainly a contrast to your average Tokyo sing-along box. Plus, the 80,000-plus video jukebox gives your iPod a run for its money—especially when you shuffle into the French, Italian, Hindi and Tagalog folders. Even though the top ten most requested selections are in English (Grease's "Summer Nights" tops the list), KO7's self-styled chanteuses can sound unintelligible if you drink too many of the half-priced happy hour sake bombs. Show tunes, hip hop, and gospel draw an eclectic and attitude-free crowd of well-groomed young professionals, moneyed international students, and Chelsea shoppers. The limited menu of Japanese beer snacks doesn't get raves, even from the staff, but you're welcome to bring your own—Basta Pasta's sea urchin linguine is just a couple doors down.
