Profile

Trendy boutiques are a dime a dozen in the East Village, but you’ll be hard pressed to find one as gracious and down-to-earth as the Cutting Image Salon. Owner and former Toni & Guy stylist Lisa Mayo brings her small-town Florida charm to this cozy three-chair parlor, which she has lovingly decorated in warm red and yellow tones and work by her artist friends. Nestled along a tranquil, tree-lined block, the salon is convenient (and open late) for its local clientele of twenty- and thirty-something artists and professionals, as well as for those visiting the nabe on a night out. The menu of services is as modest as the salon itself—cuts, highlights, single-process color, chemical straightening, and makeup application—but it’s all heaped with good cheer and focused expertise. Mayo and her crew of stylists pride themselves on listening closely to clients’ needs rather than pushing the latest trends, and further sweeten the experience with free scalp massages and discounts on their favorite haircare line, TIGI Catwalk/Bed Head. The salon’s unhurried, lounge-like vibe encourages clients to hang out (assuming they can find room), as does the wine that flows freely all day, compliments of their French café neighbor, the Bourgeois Pig.

Extra

As further testament to her cooperative spirit, Mayo uses her tiny salon to pedal the wares of local artist friends: prints by photographer Stephen Wilfong, drawings and hand-painted lampshades by Cutting Image stylist Chatsii, and Mia Baer’s line of Penelope Bare jewelry.

Bridal Hair
This cozy East Village salon always keeps wine and hors d'oeuvre on hand, and for bridal parties the staff will take things a step further by providing champagne and fresh baguettes from the French café next door. Parties of up to nine can rent out the entire salon by the hour, and bridal packages are available including bridesmaid for wash, blowout, updo, and makeup.
