Among midtown’s hotel giants, the relatively smaller Benjamin holds its own with the business and leisure crowds by offering an all-suite set-up. Built in 1927 by acclaimed architect Emery Roth as The Hotel Beverly, the property was bought by family-owned, New York-based Affinia Hospitality in 1997 and re-named in honor of the company’s patriarch. A renovation project restored many of Roth’s signature features (including Romanesque arcades and Gothic-style rose windows) while incorporating modern touches. The upgraded guest rooms now boast galley kitchens, microwaves, coffee makers, dishware and cooking utensils, plus Internet access, private fax machines, Bose radios, dozens of on-command movies, ergonomic chairs and Frette robes. Comfortable and understated, the larger-than-average chambers are decorated in warm stone, taupe and sage tones, with silver and gold accents; clean, modern bathrooms feature nice extras like magnifying mirrors in the shower. The efficient staff is quick to help with any request, noting guests’ preferences for future visits and leaving treats for those celebrating birthdays or special occasions. The “Sleep Concierge” program offers eleven different types of pillows—including 5-foot body cushions, Swedish memory, anti-snore and hypo-allergenic—plus milk and cookies, use of a white-noise machine and in-room massages (through the full-service spa) to help ensure a restful night. — Sandra Ramani
